Why You Should Never Hit the Snooze Button Again

We’ve all been there. The alarm goes off, and the first thing you do is smack the snooze button. “Just five more minutes…”

But those five minutes turn into ten… then fifteen… and maybe one more tap for good measure.

It feels harmless—like a little act of self-care to ease into the day. But let me tell you something:

Hitting snooze is one of the worst things you can do for your sleep and your energy.

The Science of Snoozing

When you hit snooze, you’re interrupting your body’s natural wake-up process.

Let me break it down:

  • Your body knows when to wake up.
During the last part of your sleep cycle, your brain starts producing hormones like cortisol to gradually wake you. It’s a carefully timed process designed to leave you feeling refreshed.
  • Snoozing throws this process into chaos.
Each time you drift back to sleep after hitting snooze, your brain thinks it’s starting a brand-new sleep cycle. But you’re only giving it a few minutes before jolting it awake again.

This back-and-forth confuses your brain and leaves you feeling more groggy than if you had just gotten up with the first alarm.

It’s called sleep inertia, and it’s why those extra few minutes never feel as good as they should.

What Happens to Your Body When You Snooze?

Hitting snooze isn’t just about feeling groggy—it messes with your entire system:

  • You increase stress hormones.
Every time your alarm rings, it spikes your cortisol. Hitting snooze means subjecting your body to repeated stress jolts before you even leave bed.
  • You sabotage your REM sleep.
If your alarm interrupts a deep sleep cycle (which often happens during snoozing), it leaves you feeling disoriented and cranky.
  • You wreck your circadian rhythm.
Consistent wake-up times are critical for good sleep. Hitting snooze creates irregular wake patterns that make it harder to fall asleep and wake up the next day.

Why Do We Snooze, Anyway?

Let’s be real—snoozing is usually a sign of bad sleep hygiene:

  • Going to bed too late.
  • Staying up scrolling on your phone.
  • Drinking caffeine or alcohol before bed.

When you’re not sleeping well, of course you’ll want to steal a few extra minutes in the morning. But the reality is, snoozing just makes the problem worse.

The Snooze-Free Morning Fix

So, how do you break the snooze cycle and wake up feeling refreshed?

Here are a few quick tips:

  1. Set a realistic bedtime.
If you’re getting less than 7–8 hours of sleep, no amount of snoozing will fix your fatigue. Prioritize sleep, and you’ll wake up naturally.
  2. Move your alarm across the room.
Make yourself get out of bed to turn it off. It’s simple, but it works.
  3. Wake up at the same time every day.
Consistency trains your body to wake up naturally without needing an alarm (yes, it’s possible!).
  4. Use a natural light alarm clock.
These mimic the sunrise, helping your body wake up gradually instead of with a blaring sound.
  5. Prepare your brain for sleep.
If you’re tossing and turning at night, give your brain the tools it needs to wind down—like magnesium, GABA, or L-theanine.

One More Thing: Your Mornings Start at Night

If you’re hitting snooze, it’s a sign that something’s off with your nighttime routine.

When I was working with Navy SEALs, I saw this all the time. These guys were the ultimate high performers, but poor sleep would wreck their mornings—and their performance.

That’s why I created Sleep Remedy. It’s a simple, natural way to give your brain the building blocks it needs to relax, recover, and wake up feeling refreshed.

So, if you’re tired of waking up groggy—or battling the snooze button—try Sleep Remedy. It’s one of the easiest ways to take back control of your sleep.
