The Most Casually Misused Hormone in America (And Why Your Kids Are Paying the Price)
I have given a lot of talks over the years. To SEAL teams, to C-suite executives, to professional athletes. And no matter who is in the room, when I bring up melatonin, I get the same reaction: a little confusion, then a little defensiveness.
Because almost everyone has used it. And almost no one understands what it actually does.
That is a problem on its own. But when we are talking about giving it to children, it becomes a conversation worth having seriously.
Melatonin Is Not a Sleep Aid
Let me start with the most important thing I can tell you: melatonin is a hormone, not a sedative.
It does not put you to sleep. What it does is signal your brain that it is dark outside. Darkness triggers a cascade of events – melatonin rises, GABA increases, your brain slows down, your core body temperature drops – and eventually, at the end of all of that, you feel sleepy.
The sleepiness is the end result. Not the mechanism.
This distinction matters enormously. When you take a melatonin gummy to “fall asleep faster,” you are not hitting a sleep switch. You are flooding your body with a hormonal signal at concentrations that are nowhere close to what your brain was designed to produce.
Your body’s natural nighttime peak is roughly 0.1 to 0.3 milligrams. Over the course of an entire night, from sundown to sunrise, your brain sees somewhere around 600 micrograms total. The standard gummy you find at any pharmacy? Typically 5 to 10 milligrams in a single dose. That is not a supplement. That is a hormonal overdose at 10 to 50 times the physiological amount, and we are giving it to children like it is a vitamin.

The Dose Is the Problem
I understand the appeal. The label says “natural.” The gummies are shaped like little bears. They are right next to the vitamin C at the checkout. Nothing about that environment signals caution.
But “natural” and “safe at any dose” are not the same thing. Arsenic is natural. Cortisol is natural, and chronic overexposure to that will age you faster than almost anything else I know. The dose makes the poison. Every physician knows this. Somehow with melatonin we collectively forgot it.
Here is what we know from the research: when you chronically expose melatonin receptors to supraphysiological doses, the body does what it always does when it gets too much of a signal — it turns down the volume. Receptor density decreases. Your brain becomes less sensitive to the signal. Now you need more melatonin just to get back to baseline function. We have observed this pattern with every other hormone we can measure. There is no physiological reason to expect melatonin to behave differently.
You gave your child melatonin so they would sleep. Now, when they skip it, they may sleep worse than before because their system has adapted to the flood. That is not supplementation. That is a dependency you created out of convenience.
I am not saying this to shame anyone. I am saying it because the physiology is what it is, and parents deserve to understand what they are actually doing when they reach for that bottle.
Children Are Not Small Adults
Here is where I want parents to pay close attention.
Melatonin does not just influence sleep. It plays a meaningful role in the broader hormonal system, and in children that system is still developing. Research suggests that melatonin has influence on the timing of reproductive hormone maturation. The pineal gland is not an isolated structure. It communicates with the entire endocrine network.
We do not have strong long-term safety data on the chronic use of supraphysiological melatonin doses in children. That is not a fringe concern or a scare tactic. That is the honest scientific picture. What we do have is a massive, uncontrolled experiment happening in real time, with millions of children receiving hormone doses their bodies were never designed to see, night after night, because the gummies were on sale and the label said “natural.”
The risk-reward calculation here does not add up. Especially when better options exist.

What Actually Works
Sleep in children, just like sleep in adults, is the end result of environment, routine, and physiology working together. When you understand the system, you can work with it instead of around it.
Children’s brains are exquisitely sensitive to light. Blue light in the evening directly suppresses the hormonal signal their brain needs to begin winding down. Every screen your child stares at after dinner is pushing back bedtime at a biological level. That is where most of the battle is being lost, and it is entirely within your control to change it.
Build a genuine wind-down routine. Lower the lights an hour before bed. Quiet the environment. Warm bath to trigger the drop in core body temperature. Soft clothing so there is minimal skin stimulation. A familiar story they already know, one with a calming rhythm to it. Same sequence, same cues, every night. You are not tricking them. You are working with the biology that has governed human sleep for hundreds of thousands of years.
When children need additional support during travel, illness, disrupted schedules, or transitions, you want something that works with the body’s natural sleep process, not something that overrides it.
A Better Option for Your Kids
That is the philosophy behind Sleep Remedy Kids Treat: Berry Sleepy Time Drink Mix.
Rather than delivering a supraphysiological hormone dose, Berry Sleepy Time is formulated to support the physiological pathway that leads to genuine, restorative sleep. The goal is to give the body what it needs to do what it was designed to do, without the receptor blunting that comes from flooding the system with high-dose melatonin night after night.
It is the same science-first thinking that drives everything we formulate at Doc Parsley’s. Bring the right building blocks to the table. Support the pathway. Let the body do its job.
Because the goal is not to knock your child out. The goal is to help them sleep the way they are built to sleep: deeply, naturally, and safely.
