Eight hours of sleep, 16 hours of being awake – that’s the sweet spot. That’s what your brain is designed for. But just stretch that by two hours – stay awake for 18 – and your performance drops to the equivalent of having a blood alcohol level of 0.05.

Now imagine you’re awake for 24 hours. That impairment gets worse. Reaction times tank. Focus disappears. You’re essentially legally drunk.

When you’re sleep-deprived, your prefrontal cortex – what Stanford neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky calls “the simulator” – starts shutting down. That’s the part of your brain that lets you run mental experiments. “What would happen if I did this?” It’s how we make decisions without doing something reckless in real life. It’s what separates us from every other animal.

But sleep debt turns that simulator off.

At the same time, stress hormones start flooding your system. Cortisol rises. Your ability to assess risk plummets. Judgment collapses.

That’s why when you’re tired, you’re more impulsive. You start taking stupid risks. It’s just like alcohol. One drink in, you’re aware of it. Two, you’re a little cautious. But four drinks in? Now you’re convincing yourself you’re fine to drive home.
