Sleep Like a SEAL: Lessons from the Battlefield for Your Bedroom

This Memorial Day, as we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service – I want to share a story from my time with the SEALs that changed the course of my life.

Because while we often talk about freedom and sacrifice today…
We don’t always talk about what it takes to live well once you’ve made it home.

That’s what this story is about.

Most people think Navy SEALs are unstoppable machines who can power through anything.

And in a lot of ways… they are.

They push their bodies past what most people even consider possible.
They go days without sleep, food, or rest.
They carry out life-threatening missions under intense physical and psychological stress.

But here’s what most people don’t know:

Even SEALs break down without sleep.

And that’s exactly what I saw – over and over again – during my time as the physician for the West Coast SEAL Teams.

The Turning Point

When I first started working with SEALs, I thought I was there to treat injuries. Broken bones. Torn ligaments. Concussions.

But what I found instead was a group of some of the most elite warriors in the world… Who were falling apart from the inside out.

They couldn’t sleep.
They were anxious, foggy, irritable, inflamed, and hormonally wrecked.
Some were dealing with memory issues in their 30s.
Most were living off stimulants just to stay functional.

And every time I dug deeper into their bloodwork, their labs, and their symptoms… I kept coming back to one root problem:

Sleep deprivation.

You Can’t “Out-Tough” Sleep Deprivation

Let me be clear: these guys were tough.
But no one – not even a SEAL – can cheat biology.

The reality is, sleep isn’t optional.
It’s not a “recovery bonus” for when life slows down.
It’s a biological requirement for basic functions like:

  • Hormone production (including testosterone)
  • Immune system regulation
  • Cognitive function
  • Emotional control
  • Physical recovery

Without it, even the strongest performers break down.

The Mission: Help SEALs Sleep — Anywhere

The problem?
You can’t exactly tell a SEAL to “just get 8 hours of sleep” when he’s jumping out of helicopters or running operations at 3 a.m.

So I had to figure out how to help them fall asleep fast – even under extreme conditions.

I started looking at what actually happens in the brain and body before natural sleep kicks in:

  • Your cortisol levels drop
  • Your GABA levels rise
  • Your brain produces a tiny bit of melatonin (not a megadose)
