Ambien, Alcohol, and “Knockout Sleep”: Why Sedation Isn’t Rest
If you’ve ever taken Ambien, had a couple of glasses of wine, or both, you probably felt like you “slept.” You closed your eyes, you went under, and you woke up hours later. But here’s the truth most people don’t want to hear: that wasn’t sleep. That was sedation. Sedation and sleep are two completely different animals.
I learned this the hard way when I was the physician for the West Coast SEAL Teams. At one point, about 85% of the guys in my command were taking Ambien every single night – most of them washing it down with alcohol. They thought they were sleeping. What they were really doing was knocking themselves unconscious for four or five hours, then dragging themselves through the day on caffeine and stress hormones.
What Sleep Really Is (And Isn’t)
Sleep isn’t just “turning off.” It’s a biologically orchestrated state that cycles through predictable stages: light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. Deep sleep is when you repair your body, rebuild muscle, balance hormones, and lower inflammation. REM sleep is when you consolidate memories, process emotions, and fine-tune your brain. You need both for healthy, restorative sleep cycles.
Here’s the problem: Ambien and the other “Z-drugs” wipe out about 80% of REM sleep and 20-40% of deep sleep. Alcohol does almost the opposite. Put the two together, and what you’re left with is essentially 99% light sleep – which is another way of saying: you didn’t actually sleep at all.

Why Sedation Feels Like Sleep
Drugs like Ambien hijack your brain’s natural sleep chemistry. Normally, the neurotransmitter GABA gradually quiets your cortex, lowering the firing potential of your neurons. That’s what allows you to stop paying attention to your environment and drift into natural sleep.
The drug companies figured out they could make synthetic molecules that bind to those same GABA receptors – only thousands of times more powerfully. Instead of gently lowering your brain into sleep, they slam the brakes so hard that your cortex goes offline. That’s sedation.
It’s also why people do bizarre things on Ambien. Drive cars. Cook meals. Have entire conversations. They’re up and moving around, but their higher brain is disconnected. The lizard brain – food, sex, survival impulses – is still active. The next morning, they have no memory of any of it.
The Cost of Faking Sleep
Think about what happens if you go night after night without deep and REM sleep. Hormones tank. Testosterone drops. Growth hormone disappears. Inflammation and blood sugar climb. Your mood swings, your memory falters, and you start to feel like you’re aging decades in a matter of years. That’s exactly what I saw in SEALs in their late 20s who were experiencing the same symptoms you’d expect in men decades older.
The pharmaceutical companies knew this. When they were finally forced to release the full set of research on Z-drugs, the data showed that people fell asleep 12 minutes faster and slept 38 minutes longer on average. But the quality of that “sleep” was so poor, they’d have been better off not taking the drug at all.

Real Sleep Is Earned, Not Hacked
If you want real sleep, you can’t shortcut it. You can’t out-pharma it, you can’t drink your way into it. You have to remove the obstacles and let your brain and body do what they are already hardwired to do. That means:
- Getting light exposure during the day and eliminating blue light at night.
- Dropping your core body temperature before bed.
- Cutting out alcohol and stimulants close to bedtime.
- Creating a quiet, cool, dark environment to sleep in.
In other words – living closer to how your biology was designed. These are the foundations behind natural sleep supplements and true sleep hygiene.
Why Getting Off Sedation Changes Everything
Sedation isn’t rest. Ambien, alcohol, Xanax – they may make you unconscious, but they rob you of the very stages of sleep that make you healthy, resilient, and high-performing.
When I worked with the SEALs, I got every guy who trusted me off sleep drugs. Every single one of them saw their health, mood, hormones, and performance rebound. It isn’t magic – it’s simply the body recovering once you move away from sedation and allow real sleep to happen.
If you’re struggling to make that shift, I built Sleep Remedy for the SEALs as a bridge off prescription drugs – a way to support the natural sleep process instead of fighting it. It’s not Ambien in a bottle, and that’s the point. It works with your biology, not against it. If you’re searching for natural sleep aids without side effects or a non-habit forming sleep supplement, this was designed with you in mind.
